The eponymous brand name refers to Ichiro Akuto – grandson of the founder of the fabled Hanyu distillery (which shuttered production in 2000). Ichiro later founded the Chichibu distillery nearby, and managed to save a number of Hanyu casks. His “Ichiro’s Malt” series typically involve vattings of both old Hanyu stock and new Chichibu production.

The Mizunara Wood Reserve (MWR) is distinctive because it is a vatting of malts that have all been aged in Japanese Mizunara oak casks (Quercus mongolica). There is an interesting article on Nonjatta that describes the influence of this type of oak on Japanese whisky.

Ichiro Akuto founded the Chichibu Distillery as recently as 2008, but his family has been involved in distilling sprits since the 17th Century. In 1941 his grandfather was the founder of the now closed but revered Hanyu Distillery. Ichiro worked for Suntory for many years and used that knowledge to build his own distillery a decade ago in the Saitama Prefecture in the village of Chichibu. This single cask release of Malt & Grain leaves little to the imagination as to its contents, of course.

Red fruits. Watered down red table wine.
Some exotic wood, probably a large tree that’s been choped down, but also some smaller bushes and shrubberies still in the ground with new sprung leaves.
Very gentle, so little wrong that it feels engineered, “Made in Japan” probably mean that it is. However that perfectionism is exactly what makes it lack that enthusiastic spark.

The distillery and founder Ichiro Akuto are recognized both inside and outside of Japan as producing some of the best Japanese whisky available today.
